Is Your Yoga Practice Stuck?

September 11, 2007 · No Comments

I was recently talking with a friend about our home yoga practices.   It can be very difficult to get a home practice going, and to maintain one when life gets busy.  Sometimes all one needs it a little motivation to get things moving at home.  So, here are some motivational suggestions to help you get started with your home practice:

 1.  Start with 10-15 minutes of home practice.  By starting small you are more likely to stick with it, and eventually build up to a longer practice.

2.  Do just a few poses and hold them longer.  Be keeping the sequence short and simple, you can get into your poses and fully experience them.  Once you get comfortable with the short sequence, you can start to slowly add in a pose or two.

 3.  Put on some music.  We can be inspired to move by listening to music.  Pick your favorite CD, and don’t be afraid to practice to your favorite rock or jazz CDs.  After all, any music that gets us moving can make a yoga practice fun.

4.  Try to have a special space for your home yoga practice.  Just a corner of the bedroom or your family room is enough room to get moving.

5.  Listen to your body!  Do you feel tired?  tight?  sore?  energetic?  Take these signs from your body and use them to direct your home practice.  You may need more stretching than strengthening poses, or you might need more time in savasana today.
