As we go about our daily lives we encounter stressful situations, tension, anger, fear, sadness and confusion. There are times where we push these emotions aside and continue about our business. In these moments of “pushing things aside” we are simply moving them into the physical body. Unexpressed emotions get stored in the physical body and over time we begin to feel tightness in the body, tension and sometimes pain.
Yoga can aid us in releasing these unexpressed emotions. As we move the body, stretch the tight areas and try to release the tension, we may also feel a variety of emotions coming to the surface.
Allow these emotions to come out, be it laughter, tears of a big heavy sigh. Once these emotions are released from the body, they no longer have a hold over us.
Not to worry, we always have tissues available in the studio, so feel free to let go as you practice your downward dog or that spinal twist.
