Yoga Product Review: Gaiam Yoga Mat Spray

November 27, 2007 · No Comments

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, on a whim, I bought a bottle of Yoga Mat Spray made by Gaiam.  Normally I use mild soap and water to wash my mat, but I thought I’d give this product a try to see if it was any better than my usual method.

So, I took the spray out for a test drive last night to see what it could do.  I followed the directions for the deepest cleaning available, after all … why not give it a full test run.  I sprayed down my yoga mat quite liberally, then scrubbed it with a wet cloth until there was a light foamy lather.  Once lathered up, the instructions asked me to wipe it all off with a clean wet cloth, so I did.  And, as instructed, I am letting the mat air-dry.

The spray has a pleasant smell, and by the look of the cloth I used, it certainly took some of the dirt off the mat.  Whether it was more effective than mild soap and water for getting the dirt off … I think both methods are about the same.  The spray claims to use organic essential oils that are antibacterial and antiseptic.  My usual soap and water does not have those properties.  And the spray claims that the mat will maintain it’s non-slip surface after a wash.  Once the mat is dried and I get on the mat to practice I can let you know.

Overall, I found the spray convenient, pleasant smelling, and it appears to clean the mat.  For the $10.00 price tag it might be worth the investment, and it certainly makes a nice gift for the yoga person in your life!
